The three of them waited for Jeff MacDougal in the patrol car with Jax and Ace sitting on the passenger side. When Jeff approached, Jax motioned for him to take the back seat.

“Seems weird being back here,” Jeff said as he got in.

Tim eyed Jax. “Sorry about that, Jeff, but believe me, there’s no arguing with our passenger.” He started the car and pulled out onto the road. “Besides, his little partner earned a front-row seat.”

“He’s a cute little guy. Where are we going, Officer Murphy?”

Jax stared at Tim now. “You make him call you Officer Murphy?”

“He’s in training,” Tim defended.

Jax rolled his eyes. “We need to talk to a couple of ex-cons in Lower Manhattan, Jeff. And you can call me Jax. This is Ace.”

“Thank you, sir. Who are these ex-cons?”

“Tony and Dominic DeLuca. Officer Murphy and I put them behind bars fifteen months ago, after they robbed a nightclub. We had received a tip from a concerned citizen and caught the two of them with over a hundred grand of stolen money. They were just sitting there counting it when we strolled into the room.”

“Whew, that’s a lot of dough,” Jeff said.

“Yes, it is, and they got off easy as usual.”

“The department store robberies are making me really nervous now, Jax,” Tim said. “I told Carla we had to wait until I got paid on Friday to go shopping for the kids, but with working extra hours this weekend, we haven’t had a chance. If the Woolworth store closes, the nearest one is in Watertown, three hundred miles away. There’s no other store in the city that carries affordable toys, and Christmas is only a week away. Rich folks can afford to travel to Philadelphia and Boston to buy their gifts, but what about the rest of us? Jesus, this could shut Christmas down completely for most of the city.”

Jeff leaned forward. “No kidding? Woolworth’s is shutting down?”

“We don’t know that yet,” Jax told him. “C’mon, Murph, get ahold of yourself. The way to stop that from happening is by finding out who’s behind it. So, let’s focus on that right now. According to what the lieutenant wrote, the DeLuca brothers live in the same apartment building on the eleventh floor. It’s going on nine o’clock, so there’s a good chance they’ll still be there.”

“Let me do the talking, Jax,” Tim said. “You’re here as an observer to watch their reactions. That’s all.”

“Yes, Officer Murphy,” Jax quipped.

Within ten minutes, Tim parked the patrol car in front of the building and commented that it looked like a pretty ritzy place. Jax told Ace to stay put, and the three of them walked to the main entrance. Once inside, the man behind the front desk lifted his head. And so did the man sitting in a chair reading the newspaper on the other side of the lobby, Jax noticed.

“Can I help you?” the desk clerk asked.

“We’re here to see Tony DeLuca,” Tim replied. “I was told he’s on the eleventh floor?”

“Yes, Officer, let me call his suite and see if he’s in.
